My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I applaud Jordan Sonnenblick for taking on this book. The subject matter is not happy go lucky like a lot of books written for this age group, but it is real, which I feel is really important. There are plenty of fantasy novels out there, but not a lot of books dealing with real life. This book deals with mortality, jealousy, anger, resentment, disappointment, pretty much everything.
There are moments when I started to get a little annoyed with Claire and all of her complaining, but it made the changes more noticeable. There are some really great happy moments followed by moments of grief. It really is a realistic look into a family’s life when something horrible happens.
I feel like the situations presented in this book were handled in such a way that kids going through difficult times with family, friends, or school can see themselves in Claire and hopefully see that they are not dealing with everything alone.
