This is one of those books that I’m going to have to read over again to figure out how I really feel about the ending. Ending a series is hard, but Brandon Mull has always managed to do it wonderfully. I own all of the books, so I really want to just take the time to read them all together without any breaks in between to see how the ending feels to me then.
There was a lot going on in this book, and you have to be paying attention to really understand what is going on. The complexity behind what was going on with the snake and time travel was a nice touch. The story wasn’t just on one level, there is depth throughout the story where things happening in the present or recent past affect things that happened long ago.
The Five Kingdoms series is one that you have to read in order to avoid complete confusion. That is one of the reasons I feel like I should read the whole series again before completely deciding on how I feel about this book. I read each book as it came out, but I’m sure there are little things that I forgot about by the time this one was published.
I liked the premise of this series and the fact that characters from the Beyonders show up every now and then. If you have read Brandon Mull’s other books, the Five Kingdoms series is one that you should read. He’s good at creating worlds that the reader can just fall into and live for a while.
